Back in 2023, we had the absolute pleasure of joining our friends from across the pond in Kansas City for two unforgettable weeks. These days were brimming with exploration, culinary adventures, and an abundance of fun and laughter. Now, we’re excited to revisit the delightful eateries we discovered and share our experiences with you. Join us as we embark on this flavorful journey, starting with our first stop: the charming Waldo Cafe, nestled in the heart of the Waldo neighbourhood.

“During our delightful stay in the vibrant city of Kansas City, we found ourselves irresistibly drawn back to Waldo Cafe—not once, but twice! This charming spot quickly became one of our favourite haunts. Upon our first visit, we were greeted by the most delightful waitress, who was visibly surprised to see two British chaps walk through the door. Her warm welcome set the tone for our entire culinary adventure through American breakfast delights.
Imagine our surprise when we discovered that every guest receives a complimentary cinnamon roll! From that moment on, I was hooked on anything cinnamon—cinnamon rolls, cinnamon swirls, you name it! The breakfast menu was a treasure trove of American classics like Chicken and Waffles, Breakfast Burritos, Biscuits and Gravy, and the hearty Country Breakfast—dishes we rarely encounter in the UK.
My husband opted for the familiar comfort of Eggs Benedict, while I ventured into uncharted territory with the Country Breakfast. This hearty meal included Biscuits and Gravy, Hashbrowns, Eggs, Bacon, and a Sausage Patty. Now, when I say Hashbrowns, forget the triangular potato pieces you’re used to in the UK. These were a glorious mound of grated and fried potato and onion, cooked to perfection. The eggs were classic American “Sunny Side Up,” a term that’s slowly gaining popularity back home.
The portions were so generous that a light lunch or just a coffee and cake was all we needed until dinner. This became our routine during our two-week vacation.
Our return visit to Waldo Cafe speaks volumes about its charm and quality. If you ever find yourself in Kansas City, or if you’re a local or from a neighbouring state, make sure to visit Waldo Cafe. It’s a quintessential American neighbourhood diner, ready to welcome you with its warm and tasty menu.”
