Hello again readers! It’s our 4th Daily Prompt, and to be honest with you, I am enjoying writing these alongside the nature of our blog, food. This one seems perfect for the blog. So, what’s the most money you’ve spent on a meal, and was it worth it?
So, context. We went on a family holiday to Yorkshire a few years back, visiting lovely seaside towns, like Whitby, Staithes and Runswick Bay. We had planned that we would take turns paying for a meal out, so the cost was for 5 people. It probably came to around £130. The venue? It was called The Black Bull, just outside Ugthorpe, near Whitby. Now, these portions were absolutely HUGE, like… we got our money’s worth for sure, and it was all cooked beyond perfection.
You’ll probably wonder what we ordered, so let me delve in. My husband and I both went for the Chicken Parmesan which was a butterflied whole chicken breast coated in breadcrumbs topped with lashings of cheese sauce and grated cheese, finished off with perfect chips, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and a salad. My dad and brother chose the hefty mixed grill, now this was a monster of a dish, both in terms of the food on the plate, and the price! It came with black pudding, 6oz rump steak, lamb steak, pork steak, sausages, gammon, fried eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomato, peas and chips….it makes me feel hungry typing that all up! I think my mum ordered the chicken and pineapple curry, which had chicken, pineapple, peppers, and sultanas in a medium spiced sauce, with rice or chips (or half and half (the best choice if you ask me)). It’s accompanied by some crispy poppodoms and mango chutney, salivating!
So the answer to the second question, was it worth it? YES. We speak about it so much, it’s like a benchmark for us. Big portions, home-cooked food that wraps its arms around your belly and gives it a big old hug, and it was run by the friendliest of people. To top it off, when we were there they had a special dessert board, featuring a weekly cheesecake…that week it was Battenberg cheesecake. Imagine the crust of the cheesecake, but it was a Battenberg cake. It was my husband’s highlight of the trip, well….that and visiting Boggle Hole.
