Exploring Kansas City, Missouri, was a delightful adventure, especially when we discovered its vibrant brewery and distillery scene. Our journey took us to Casual Animal Brewing Co, Boulevard Brewing Company, and Holladay Distillery. While Casual Animal Brewing Co was our go-to spot for a quick drink, Boulevard and Holladay offered us immersive tours that sparked a newfound passion for brewery and distillery tours. Since then, we’ve ventured to Heineken’s brewery in Amsterdam and Mermaid Gin distillery on the Isle of Wight, each visit deepening our appreciation for the craft. First up, we take a deeper look into Casual Animal Brewing Co, owned by Kyle and Lara Gray.

Casual Animal: “Laid-back beers that tap into your wild side” is the motto at Casual Animal Brewing Co. Their lineup features creatively named brews like “Blue Flamingo,” “The Earth Hound,” and “Luminary Canary.” Central to their business is the “Local Motive” concept, ensuring that supporting the Kansas City community is at the heart of everything they do.
Local Motive is Casual Animal’s “give-back tap,” where the beer style and beneficiary change every two months. For each pint sold, $2 goes to a selected non-profit or charity. These organizations also get to host a variety of events—like quiz nights, music gigs, and parties—to boost awareness and fundraising. Each year, six different non-profits get the chance to benefit from Casual Animal Brewing Co’s Local Motive program.
During our visit to Kansas City from England, we couldn’t resist stopping by Casual Animal Brewing Co. twice. The bar is massive, with large wooden floors and lush green plants that make the place pop. There’s a cozy board game area, and the walls are adorned with art by the owner and lead brewer, Kyle. In one corner, you’ll find merch and drinks, with plenty of T-shirts and glasses to choose from. They even offer bar snacks and occasional food pop-ups for those who need a bite. I particularly loved their different drink sizes; as someone who enjoys sampling various flavours without drinking too much, the “swift” size was perfect. Casual Animal Brewing Co. is a trendy, modern brewery that not only crafts excellent beers, lagers, and IPAs but also has supporting the community at the heart of their business.
