During our April 2023 trip to Kansas City, Missouri, one dessert spot stood out: Betty Rae’s. With multiple locations — including the River Market store we visited and a new one in Prairie Village — Betty Rae’s has become a must-visit for ice cream lovers in the city.
From the moment we approached the River Market location, the exterior, adorned with a playful ice cream mural, promised a fun and memorable experience. Inside, vibrant colours, eye-catching menus, and artistic wall designs create a welcoming atmosphere. Seating options are ample, whether you want a cosy booth or a window seat to watch the bustling streets of Kansas City.
Atmosphere & Setting:
Betty Rae’s blends artistic charm with practicality. The shop feels spacious and vibrant, perfectly reflecting its community-focused ethos. Merchandise displays add character and provide a unique connection to the brand, a concept less common in the UK but embraced fully here. It’s a place that feels lively yet comfortable — ideal for families, solo visitors, or groups of friends.
What We Ordered:
The menu features 26 rotating ice cream flavours, from classic vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry to creative options like Cereal & Milk and Crème Brûlée.
We indulged in the Chocolate Brownie Sundae, a delightful combination of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, rich brownie pieces, fudge sauce, and a generous dollop of whipped cream. While served in a plastic tray, it was an absolute triumph of texture and flavour, setting a high standard for ice cream in Kansas City.
Other pastries and sundaes are equally inventive, and every bite reflects the bakery’s dedication to quality and creativity.
Service & Overall Experience:
Staff at Betty Rae’s were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. They were pleasantly surprised to see visitors from the UK, adding a warm, personal touch to our visit. Beyond the ice cream itself, Betty Rae’s community commitment — donating 10% of profits to local, national, and international causes — reinforces why this shop is beloved locally.
