The shop prides itself on using high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients to craft their ice cream, ensuring every scoop is fresh and flavourful. With its vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff, Betty Rae’s is a must-visit destination for ice cream lovers in Kansas City.
Our Review:
April 2023: A time we wish we could rewind to, returning to the enchanting Kansas City. This vibrant city, brimming with unique shops, lush parks, and bustling plazas, offers a plethora of culinary delights. Yet, when it comes to sweet treats, one name rises above the rest: Betty Rae’s. With four locations and a newly opened fifth in Prairie Village, Betty Rae’s is a beacon for dessert enthusiasts.
Our visit to the River Market location, the second of Betty Rae’s establishments, was nothing short of delightful. From the moment we approached, the shop’s exterior, adorned with a captivating ice cream mural, promised an experience to remember. Stepping inside, the artistic charm continued with walls adorned with vibrant designs, eye-catching menus, and bold, beautiful colours at every turn. The spacious interior offered ample seating options, whether you preferred a cosy booth or a window seat to watch the world go by.
A standout feature of Betty Rae’s is their impressive array of 26 ice cream flavours, always ready to delight their customers. While you can find the classic favourites like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, Betty Rae’s also tempts with unique creations such as Cereal & Milk and Crème Brûlée. Despite the enticing variety, my attention was irresistibly drawn to the sundaes, particularly the Chocolate Brownie Sundae. This masterpiece combines chocolate and vanilla ice cream, decadent brownie pieces, rich fudge sauce, and a generous dollop of whipped cream, slightly let down by being presented in a plastic tray. Still, it’s an absolute triumph in the world of ice cream, setting a benchmark that others strive to meet. Betty Rae’s has yet to be surpassed in my book.
One aspect I truly appreciated about Betty Rae’s, and many other dining spots in Kansas City, is their dedication to promoting their brand. Unlike in the UK, where it’s rare to find restaurants or cafes selling branded merchandise, here they embrace it wholeheartedly. I picked up a couple of stickers during my visit, and every time I see them, I’m transported back to that cosy window seat, savouring delicious ice cream. Merchandise carries memories, and it’s something UK businesses should consider—not only does it create a lasting connection with customers, but it also brings in a bit of extra revenue.
Moreover, Betty Rae’s commitment to their community is commendable. They donate 10% of their profits to local, national, and international organizations, charities, and individuals dedicated to making a positive impact. This blend of brand promotion and community support makes Betty Rae’s a standout in more ways than one.
As was the norm with the places we visited in Kansas City, the staff at Betty Rae’s were exceptionally friendly. They were pleasantly surprised to see two Brits walk into their establishment! Their warm welcome added to the charm of our visit, making the experience even more memorable.

Gourmet Gauge:
The ice cream at Betty Rae’s tasted phenomenal. While the presentation lost a point for being served in a plastic tray, the store’s incredible murals and artwork created a vibrant atmosphere, though it might be sensory overload for some. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Although it is pricier than some other ice cream shops, the unique flavours make it a worthwhile treat.
