My husband is a true coffee aficionado. Whether it’s the familiar comfort of Starbucks or the rich flavours of Costa Coffee, he savours every sip. But his real passion lies in discovering independent coffee shops, where each cup tells a unique story. Last year, we had the pleasure of visiting Kansas City, and it was like stepping into a coffee lover’s paradise. The sheer number of coffee shops was astounding, each one offering its own distinct charm and exceptional brews. From cosy, tucked-away cafes to bustling, trendy spots, every place we visited left us more impressed than the last. My husband was in coffee heaven, delighting in the diverse and delightful coffee culture that Kansas City has to offer.

Messenger Coffee Co quickly became one of his favourite spots during our two-week stay in Kansas City. It wasn’t just the incredible taste of the coffee that won him over, but also the impressive variety of styles available. Back home in the UK, he’s a latte enthusiast, but at Messenger Coffee, he had the chance to explore beyond his usual choice. He delighted in trying a cortado, a rare find in the UK, and even ventured into the world of cold brew, which is still gaining popularity back home. The excitement didn’t stop there; Messenger Coffee also offered a delightful selection of spring seasonal drinks, each one more enticing than the last. The combination of exceptional coffee and diverse options made every visit a new adventure for him.
Along with our drinks, we decided to indulge in some of the delicious food offerings at Messenger Coffee. It was the perfect pit stop before heading to the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. While jazz isn’t usually my cup of tea, I found myself captivated by the museum, especially the live jazz performance that brought the history to life. My husband, who isn’t typically a sports enthusiast, was equally impressed by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Both museums offered us a fascinating glimpse into new worlds, enriching our visit to Kansas City in unexpected ways.
I decided to treat myself to the Sunrise Breakfast Sandwich, a delightful creation featuring a brioche bap filled with Sunnyside eggs, cheese, bacon, and a luscious avocado sauce. It was absolutely delicious and a refreshing change from the typical offerings back home. As I often mention in my American blog posts, the staff here were incredibly friendly, helpful, and cheerful. They were thrilled to chat with some Brits, which probably doesn’t happen too often.
We visited the location at 1624 Grand Boulevard, which was bustling with people working on their laptops, making it a popular spot for office workers and students alike. I also appreciated the water cooler providing free water, a thoughtful touch for someone like me who prefers tap water over paying a premium for bottled water.”

Gourmet Gauge:
Everything we had at Messenger Coffee Co. tasted delicious. The coffee shop was bustling, and the workers on laptops took up a lot of tables, for some this could have a negative impact on their experience if they want a quieter relaxing setting.
