A Journey to Kansas City: A Snapshot of Our Adventure

We were incredibly fortunate to have friends in Kansas City, whom my husband met during his university days when one of them came over for a year to study. Their friendship has remained strong ever since. Last April, we were thrilled to be invited to stay with them for two weeks. While my husband had previously visited New York City, this was my first time in America.

What fascinated me most were the everyday sights that Americans might find mundane. I was eager to see the iconic yellow school buses, distinctive mailboxes, and police squad cars. Growing up as a video gamer, many of my favourite games were set in America, so seeing these familiar elements in real life was surreal.

We made the most of our visit, turning our friends into tourists in their own city with the sheer number of places we explored. We toured the Kansas City Chiefs stadium, watched a KC Royals baseball game, and cheered for the KC Mavericks ice hockey team. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, visiting the Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Boulevard Brewery, and the KC Zoo, among many other attractions.

Our culinary adventures were just as exciting. We dined out nearly every night, sampling Kansas City’s finest offerings, which you can read about in my blog. We enjoyed meals at Taco Naco, SLAP BBQ, and Harvey’s in Union Station, and indulged in ice cream and frozen custard at Betty Rae’s and Andy’s. We even had the chance to meet their parents and friends over food and Tuesday night quizzes at Cinderblock.

Those two weeks were packed with adventure and flew by far too quickly. The silver lining is that we’re already planning a road trip to Colorado for 2026!
