The Malt Shovel: A Hidden Gem Just Down the Lane

Just 15 minutes down the road from us is the quaint village of Cannington, the base of the new Hinkley Point power station. But situated within the little village is a family-run pub named The Malt Shovel. We have been numerous times since the new family took over the establishment. Check out our review down below.

Our Review:

“As mentioned in the introduction above, we have frequented this charming establishment several times. Nestled down a country lane, it is somewhat secluded, but isn’t that where the best places are often found? Upon entering, you are greeted by a rustic ambiance with low-hanging beams—tall visitors, like my family, should mind their heads! To the left, there is a cosy games area featuring a pool table, while to the right, the seating area awaits those eager to enjoy a meal.

The pub offers an extensive selection of drinks, encompassing everything one would expect. Near the entrance, a specials board displays the dessert menu alongside a few special main courses. Although the variety of specials has not been vast over our many visits, the quality is consistently exceptional. Notable dishes include their Beef Enchiladas, Fish Cakes, and Liver and Bacon. I have personally enjoyed the Beef Enchiladas, which were absolutely delightful—100% homemade pub fare. Recently, my father opted for the Liver and Bacon, a dish rarely seen on menus these days. He devoured it, reminiscing about the meals his mother-in-law used to prepare.

Throughout our numerous visits, we have sampled a wide array of menu items. Their offerings include burgers, Beef Enchiladas, gammon, egg and chips, pasta dishes, salads, roast dinners, fish and chips, and a variety of sides and desserts. The majority of these dishes have been absolutely delicious. For a family-run pub, I am more than happy to keep returning. Scott and his team are truly excelling in their efforts.”

Gourmet Gauge:
The food is exceptional, with presentation that perfectly embodies the homemade pub fare style. The ambiance is charmingly rustic, though the low-hanging beams may pose a slight inconvenience for taller guests. Scott and his team provide outstanding, friendly service, and the quality of the food justifies the cost.
