Our Review:

“During our five-day escapade in Edinburgh, we had a packed itinerary that included a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, the Johnny Walker Experience, and a highly anticipated meal at Makars Gourmet Mash Bar. With its accolades as the number one restaurant in the UK and ninth globally, our expectations were sky-high—and Makars Mash did not disappoint.

The first striking feature of Makars Mash is its two locations: one for walk-ins and one exclusively for pre-booked diners. Having made a reservation, we headed to North Bank Street, where we were warmly welcomed by the attentive staff and promptly shown to our table. The menu, though simple, is a testament to flavourful, locally sourced ingredients. For starters, we both chose the renowned Scotch Egg, followed by Wild Boar Sausages with Bacon & Spring Onion Mash for me and a Lamb Shank with Scottish Cheddar Mash for my husband.

The culinary experience was exceptional. The Scotch Egg, halved to reveal a perfectly sticky yolk, paired beautifully with a garlicky dipping sauce. It was no surprise these eggs are celebrated citywide! The main courses were equally impressive. The Lamb Shank, slow-cooked with tomato, rosemary, and red wine, was so tender it practically melted off the bone. The accompanying cheddar mash was creamy and comforting, complemented by a side of honey-drizzled grated carrot and a root vegetable medley—an absolute delight. My Wild Boar Sausages, infused with smoky bacon, were arguably the finest I’ve ever tasted. Each bite was a harmonious blend of textures and flavours, enhanced by a rich, onion gravy.

While we didn’t sample the vegetarian options, Makars Mash’s commitment to plant-based cooking is evident, with their own lions mane mushrooms cultivated on-site. Though the prices are on the higher side, the quality and overall dining experience justify the cost. Without a doubt, we would eagerly return to Makars Mash on our next visit to Edinburgh. It was a meal that set a high bar for our gastronomic adventures.”
