What are your family’s top 3 favorite meals?

What a good question for our blog! In the last few years, “Tuesday Night Dinner” has become a family tradition. My husband, brother, and I would head over to our parents for a lovely home-cooked meal. So, I will base the above question on what meal we love the most.

  1. Roast Dinner: The ultimate meal in my opinion. My mum cooks one of the best roasts I have had. The meat? Chicken. The companions? Crispy roast potatoes, a medley of vegetables, usually consisting of peas, carrots, sprouts and parsnips. Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, and a couple of sausages. Traditionally, sausages are not part of a roast dinner, but my nan used to serve them on her roast, and my mum has now followed suit. If we are lucky, or it’s Christmas, you could also expect more accompaniments, such as pigs in blankets, roast sweet potato, mashed swede & carrot, cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower cheese. This is all covered in lashings of thick gravy.
  2. Chicken Casserole: Another classic, perfect for a winter night. Chicken breasts, cooked in a meaty gravy alongside mixed veg, topped with some suet dumplings. This is usually paired with some creamy mashed potatoes and peas.
  3. Chicken & Bacon Pie: This one is a rare meal for us, mum loves a casserole as she can slow cook it and not have much hassle. Chicken & Bacon fried off, sometimes with leeks as well, spooned into an oven dish, topped with a homemade cheese sauce, covered in puff pastry. This is served with either roast potatoes, mashed potatoes or chips, and served with peas and carrots. Another banger.
  4. Lasagne: A naughty 4th entry! Probably one of the best lasagnas I’ve had. Perfectly cooked, crispy around the edges where it has caught in the oven, defined layers. Served with garlic bread, chips and if we’re lucky…homemade potato salad.
