Buckle up, foodies, because today we’re diving into a deliciously quirky clash of culinary worlds. In one corner, we have the cosy and caffeine-fueled charm of Mildred’s, a coffee haven nestled just off West & 18th Street in Kansas City. In the opposite corner, it’s sweet, creamy chaos with Andy’s Frozen Custard holding court on Westport Rd. These two couldn’t be more different if they tried—think of it as a latte-loving librarian squaring off against a dessert-drenched party animal.

Our Review:
Let’s get ready to rumble in the culinary ring! In the blue corner, we have the cosy contender, Mildred’s, packing the warm embrace of breakfast bliss. In the red corner, stepping into the spotlight with sugar-fueled swagger, it’s Andy’s Frozen Custard! Who will take the title in this flavour-packed face-off? Let’s break it down!
Taste:
🥊 Round 1: Mildred’s Brunch Blitz Mildred’s doesn’t just serve breakfast—they deliver flavour knockouts with every dish. The Chipotle Breakfast Wrap is a spicy uppercut to the taste buds, featuring steamed eggs, smoky bacon, breakfast potatoes, cheddar, and chipotle aioli all wrapped snugly in a flour tortilla. Then there’s the Standard Sandwich, a heavyweight contender of steamed eggs, bacon, American Swiss, and Dijon-mayo—all stacked on your choice of bun. They’ve got the veggie-friendly moves too, with plant-based versions of their classics. And for a true breakfast champion, there’s the legendary Biscuits & Gravy, smothered in rich, comforting goodness. When we sampled the Standard Sandwich and the Chipotle Breakfast Wrap, they landed every punch flawlessly. Bonus points for the steamed eggs—innovative and game-changing in texture!
🥊 Round 2: Andy’s Frozen Custard Frenzy Andy’s Frozen Custard comes in swinging with sweet, icy combinations that are as bold as they are irresistible. Their Concretes are dense flavour bombs—like the famous BootDaddy Concrete, a powerhouse blend of vanilla custard, crème caramel, and hot fudge. And let’s not forget the jaw-dropping Ooey Gooey Concrete, which throws Heath bar chunks, crème caramel, and almonds into the ring. But wait, there’s more—their legendary Jackhammers are customizable wonders! Choose any Concrete as your base, then drill the centre with fillings like hot fudge or caramel for a dessert KO. We were so enchanted by Andy’s Frozen Custard’s championship moves, that we came back for seconds (and thirds) during our trip. These frozen delights didn’t just land punches—they won our hearts.
Presentation:
🥊 Round 3: The Presentation Punch-Out: Mildred’s comes out swinging with heartwarming packaging flair in the ring of presentation. Each breakfast item is cradled in beautifully designed wrapping, like a protective bearhug for your taste treasures inside. The Chipotle Breakfast Wrap was skillfully sliced in half, revealing a mouthwatering cross-section of its savoury contents. It’s almost like unwrapping a gift, except this one fills your stomach instead of your shelf.
🥊 Round 4: Visual Appeal Showdown: On the flip side, Andy’s Frozen Custard is all about function over fanfare. Their frozen delights arrive unapologetically piled high in classic, no-nonsense plastic cups. Overflowing custard? Check. Towering toppings? Double check. Why fix what isn’t broken when simplicity lets the flavours do all the talking? It’s a presentation style that’s as straightforward as a jab, and just as effective.
Ambience:
🥊 Round 5: Mildred’s Atmosphere Advantage: Mildred’s steps into the ring with a studious vibe straight out of an academic training camp. The place was buzzing with laptops—so much so that it felt like you’d accidentally walked into an old-school internet café making a nostalgic comeback. But underneath the digital flurry was a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Friends caught up over steaming cups of coffee, their laughter adding a lively undertone to the hum of keyboards. It’s the kind of place where you could linger for hours, soaking up both caffeine and camaraderie.
🥊 Round 6: Andy’s After-Hours Energy: Meanwhile, Andy’s Frozen Custard brought an entirely different game plan to the ambience round. While we primarily experienced it through their efficient drive-thru, a quick peek inside revealed a more laid-back vibe, with a few customers enjoying their desserts. It’s clear, though, that this Westport venue operates as a drive-thru dynamo—especially during peak evening hours, when it plays to its strengths as a takeaway titan. And let’s not forget the staff, who seemed to be having as much fun as their customers. That energy radiated out, making the experience feel just a little sweeter.
Service:
🥊 Round 7: Mildred’s Service Style: Mildred’s steps confidently into the service ring, showing off a well-oiled team that worked together like seasoned sparring partners. Their service was responsive, efficient, and marked by genuine friendliness—a winning combo in anyone’s playbook. The staff went above and beyond, even recommending some breakfast heavyweights to help us make the best choice. With their teamwork and attentiveness, Mildred’s scores a solid hit in this round.
🥊 Round 8: Andy’s Friendly Knockout: As we move into Andy’s Frozen Custard corner, the drive-thru team delivers a charm offensive that’s impossible to dodge. From the moment we were greeted over the tannoy, the staff exuded warmth and friendliness. That energy only ramped up as we made our way to each window, with smiles and genuine joy shining through. It was clear the team enjoyed their work, and their enthusiasm was downright contagious. Andy’s turns service into a powerhouse punch of positivity, leaving a sweet aftertaste long after you’ve driven off.
Value for Money:
🥊 Round 9: Mildred’s Price Tag Tussle: Mildred’s enters the value-for-money ring with a wide-ranging breakfast menu, priced between $4.99 and $10.49. That’s £3.85 for the humble Bagel & Cream Cheese to £8.09 for the indulgent Vegan Breakfast Hash. Coffee aficionados can expect to shell out $3.50 to $4.75 (£2.70 to £3.66), which, when you factor in the generous American portion sizes, feels like a solid jab in the value department. A Medium Latte especially holds its own at £3.66, undercutting similar offerings back in the UK.
But not all items in Mildred’s arsenal hit the same sweet spot. The bagel’s price lands squarely as a value champ, but the Vegan Breakfast Hash feels like it’s playing above its weight class—flavorful, sure, but perhaps a touch overpriced. Still, with standout items that punch well above their weight, Mildred’s holds its ground in this crucial round.
🥊 Round 10: Andy’s Custard Championship: Now stepping into the price arena, Andy’s Frozen Custard delivers a one-two combo of flavour and affordability. With Concretes averaging around $7 (£5.40), it’s a jaw-dropping value for the generous servings you receive. And if you decide to upgrade your dessert to a Jackhammer, the price rises by a mere $0.49 (around 37p)—a small price for a big upgrade in indulgence.
When you consider the size and richness of these frozen treats, Andy’s delivers a heavyweight performance that leaves a sweet impression without packing a punch to your wallet. It’s the ultimate dessert bargain that satisfies without compromise.
