In 2023, we set sail once again for the majestic Norwegian Fjords — this time with a new twist in the itinerary. Our first cruise had taken us to the charming ports of Stavanger, Olden, Alesund, and Haugesund, but round two swapped Alesund for the tiny village of Hellesylt. And when I say tiny, I mean it — just 240 people call it home!
Though Hellesylt is a postcard-worthy stop in its own right, with serene walks and sweeping views, our sights were set on somewhere even more spellbinding: the nearby village of Geiranger. As we cruised past the legendary Seven Sisters waterfall, the anticipation built — and Geiranger did not disappoint. Nestled among the fjords like a hidden treasure, it’s here that we stumbled upon a sweet surprise: Sjokolade, a quaint little chocolate factory and café that turned out to be the perfect reward for our scenic trek.

Our Review:
“Tucked into a cosy harbour hut in the heart of Geiranger, Sjokolade may be small, but it’s big on charm. This pint-sized factory and café opens its doors from May to October, perfectly timed for the influx of wide-eyed adventurers rolling in on cruise ships and winding roads. Step inside, and you’re greeted not just with the scent of rich, velvety chocolate but with a vibe that’s equal parts seaside shack and Scandinavian chic.
Barrels double as rustic tables, crates cling to the walls like artful storage solutions, and thick nautical rope weaves its way through the décor like a sailor’s signature. The whole space is wrapped in warm wood tones, with bursts of bold blue that echo the nearby fjord waters. It’s compact, quirky, and completely captivating — the kind of spot that feels discovered, not just visited.
If you thought Norwegian fjords were the highlight of the trip, just wait until you meet their chocolate. Sjokolade offers a surprisingly bold and creative range of handcrafted treats, with flavours that dance from the familiar to the adventurous: think smooth mint, fiery chilli, and yes… even cheese-infused chocolate (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!).
Beyond the shelves of indulgent goodies, the on-site café tempts with a menu that’s impossible to resist. Whether you’re in the mood for a rich coffee, one of their six decadent hot chocolate variations, a fresh sandwich, a slice of cake, or their beloved local speciality — the waffle-on-a-stick — this little spot delivers big. On our visit, we couldn’t resist the waffle (obviously), a gooey brownie, and a pair of luxurious hot chocolates. And let me tell you — every bite and sip was pure, cocoa-fuelled bliss. Who knew Norwegian chocolate could be this good? Absolute heaven.
We couldn’t leave without taking a little piece of Sjokolade home — and yes, we went for the cheese-flavoured chocolate. Because really, when else are you going to stumble across that kind of wild culinary curiosity? And here’s the kicker: it was delicious. So much so, we instantly regretted not stuffing our suitcase with a few extra packs. Lesson learned.
So if Norway’s on your radar — whether you’re gliding in by cruise ship or road-tripping through the breathtaking fjords — make sure Geiranger makes the cut. And once you’re there? Do yourself a favour: find Sjokolade, order a waffle-on-a-stick, sip something sweet, and sink into the chocolatey magic. It’s a taste of Norway you won’t forget.”
