Roll back a few years and we were on our first family staycation to Yorkshire, something which has now become a fort-yearly tradition. We got to the Monday during our stay and wanted to find somewhere to eat, now this was just post-Covid19 and it seemed that almost every eating venue was using Monday as their deep clean day. My dad was panicking, as the ones we had previously visited were all closed, until I stepped in with the recommendation of The Black Bull in Ugthorpe. How did they do, where did they rank on our coveted Gourmet Gauge Scoresheet…well, scroll on down to find out.

We got to the Black Bull and the car park was pretty empty, now that for me, is normally worrying, as even on a quiet night you’d expect a busy car park. We walk in, the gaff seems like its pretty empty too, I mean, this place was in the middle of nowhere, and only had a campsite near to it. We got seated in the corner in the back room, we could see the door that led to the kitchen, and pleasantly, the smells that came from it.
The food. The food. The food. It’s Yorkshire, they do big portions, but the food was delicious, divine, flawless, homely, comforting, any good descriptive word will do. On our first night here…yes, we loved it so much we came again 3 days later. On our first night my Mum ventured for the steak pie with seasonal veg, my Dad went for the hunters chicken with chips and peas, and my husband, brother and myself all went for the chicken parmo with chips and coleslaw. Clean plates all round. The chips perfectly crisp yet fluffy. Chicken parmo caked in bechamel sauce and melted cheese. The second visit my Dad and brother both went for their mixed grills, a literal animal mountain of meat piled high, with onion rings, fried eggs, grilled tomatoes, peas and chips.
Then…then you have the desserts, and to this day, I’m pretty sure this place is where my husband has had his favourite ever dessert. A Battenberg cheesecake, yes you heard that right, a vanilla cheesecake but it had slices of Battenberg round the outside. Oh, and the sticky toffee pudding was a right slab, drenched in sticky toffee sauce and 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream. Presentation wise, nothing to complain about here it was plated elegantly, yet also homely at the same time.
Although it was quiet we still enjoyed the atmosphere and the place itself was decorated to feel like your local pub, loads of wood, plenty of bar space, and the other people who were there were also enjoying themselves. The service here though, that got a score of 10, they were all over us, and not in a smothering way. Checked on us to make sure the food was all good, checked for allergens, bought us out the dessert board, spoke to us about our day and what we have planned for the remainder of the holiday. We also learnt that some nights the waiters Nan frequents the kitchen, and that the very cheesecake my husband enjoyed was baked by herself!
Price wise it was all very affordable, even more so when you take into consideration the portion sizes and just how good it was. We hope to visit Yorkshire again at some point, and when we do, The Black Bull will have us their in a heartbeat.
