Yesterday we went on a little trip to The Newt, and beforehand we visited Castle Cary for some breakfast and a little baked goodie. Here’s what we thought of the bakery that we visited.

Our Review:
“Growing up in my hometown of Shepton Mallet, I would frequent our local bakery on the way back from school, picking up a doughnut every now and again. That bakery was called Danela’s, and the reason I visited it a lot was that my friends nan worked there. Anyway, we were looking at places to eat at before heading to The Newt and I noticed that they had a Danela’s in Castle Cary too, so of course we had to head their for a blast of nostalgia.
They had a plethora of baked goods for sale, from doughnuts, pies, pasties & all sorts of cake. The one nostalgic baked good I was looking for was an iced ring doughnut covered in multicolour sprinkles, and of course, as I walked past the shop window, there they were, calling my name. I had to get 2, one for there and then, and one for later on in the day, because I know I would be wanting another!
They were just how I remembered them from back in the day, almost a slight crisp on the outside, with a soft fluffy inside, and the perfect amount of icing, not too sweet, but enough to make plenty of sprinkles stick to the top of it. The service was top notch, and the price was very good too, I think I paid around £2.50 per doughnut, which for the size and quality of it, I’d happily pay again. Obviously, this is a bakery, so it is strictly takeaway, there are no seats inside.
Pros & Cons:
- Great service and price✅
- A hit of nostalgia✅
- No seating ❌
Gourmet Gauge: The hit of nostalgia wins this one for me, and the doughnuts still look good in my eyes. The bakery has a 1990’s feel to it, and was very similar to the one I grew up visiting.

Something I always get into around this time of year is Lego, all thanks to Brick Borrow, where I can borrow sets, build them and send them back. It has been around for so long and has been in kids childhoods for millions of people across the globe. I think it is time that we celebrate Lego, even if it is a one off. People can build huge masterpieces to reveal on the big day, discounts off sets, people sharing their favourite builds. Generations coming together.
