On one of the coldest and snowiest days of our trip to Toronto, we stumbled across Castle & Coal after visiting a nearby bookstore. The small artisan bakery had been pinned on my Google Maps list in advance, and it turned out to be a wonderful spontaneous stop during a chilly winter walk.

Dining at Castle & Coal:
Castle & Coal is a compact artisan bakery specialising in freshly prepared pastries and desserts. You can see the kitchen directly behind the counter, which immediately gives confidence in the freshness and quality of the food.
I opted for a cinnamon croissant hybrid pastry. The outer layer had a satisfying crispness, while the interior was soft, delicate and beautifully balanced in texture.
My husband chose their deep-style cookie, which surprisingly became his favourite cookie of the entire trip despite us visiting several speciality dessert shops across Toronto.
Atmosphere & Setting:
The café was warm, cosy and welcoming — a perfect refuge from the freezing winter weather outside. Although small, the space felt intimate rather than cramped, and the friendly service added to the homey feeling of the visit.
What We Ordered:
- Cinnamon croissant hybrid pastry
- Deep-style cookie
Service & Overall Experience
Service was friendly and relaxed. It felt like visiting a local hidden gem rather than a tourist dessert stop, which was part of the charm.
Final Thoughts:
Castle & Coal was one of those under-the-radar discoveries that ended up being a highlight of our trip. It’s a cosy, slightly off-the-main-tourist-path bakery with genuinely good pastries and a comforting atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer.
