When it comes to experiencing the best BBQ in Kansas City, few places are as highly regarded as Q39. Known for its award-winning barbecue, premium cuts of meat, and vibrant atmosphere, Q39 has become a staple for locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re searching for authentic Kansas City barbecue or a memorable dining experience, this is a spot that consistently delivers.

Dining at Q39:
We visited Q39 one evening during our two-week stay in Kansas City, and while the food was exceptional, what made this visit truly special were the memories created.
We were invited to meet our friends’ parents (both sides!), and what could have been a slightly nerve-wracking introduction quickly turned into an unforgettable evening. Bonding over great BBQ, laughter, and conversation made this one of the standout experiences of our entire trip.
Atmosphere & Setting:
Q39 was bustling from the moment we arrived, a clear sign of its popularity among BBQ lovers. The interior strikes a balance between modern restaurant and classic barbecue joint, with wooden tables, bar seating, and shelves lined with awards, sauces, and branded merchandise.
There’s a lively yet comfortable feel throughout the space, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a favourite. The addition of merchandise adds to the authenticity—something you see often in the US, and something UK restaurants could definitely learn from.
What We Ordered:
The menu at Q39 is a dream for barbecue enthusiasts. Starters included options like bacon-wrapped shrimp and smoked pork belly, setting the tone for what was to come.
For mains, we both chose the Angus Beef Brisket, which came with smoked brisket, burnt ends, and BBQ sauce—a true Kansas City classic. Each dish also included two sides, and we opted for baked beans with burnt ends (because you can never have too many) and crispy fries with chipotle mayo.
Every element of the meal was packed with flavour—the brisket was tender and smoky, the burnt ends rich and indulgent, and the sides perfectly complemented the main event. Quite simply, it was absolutely delicious.
Service & Overall Experience
Service at Q39 was just as impressive as the food. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, continuing the trend we experienced throughout Kansas City.
There was a genuine warmth in how we were treated, with a touch of curiosity at seeing two Brits dining there, which added a personal and memorable element to the evening. Even in a busy setting, everything ran smoothly and efficiently.
Final Thoughts:
Q39 delivers everything you could want from a Kansas City BBQ experience—incredible food, generous portions, and a lively atmosphere. With mains priced at around $26, it also offers excellent value considering the quality and quantity of food.
More than just a meal, this was an experience filled with great company and lasting memories. If (and when) we return to Kansas City, Q39 will be high on our list for a return visit.
