Visiting Blackhole Bakery

During our April 2023 trip to Kansas City, we discovered one of the city’s most unique sweet spots — Blackhole Bakery. Located on Troost Avenue, this independent bakery specialises in mochi donuts, combining the chewy texture of Japanese mochi with bold, American-inspired flavours.

If you’re looking for something beyond traditional donuts or standard bakery fare, this is the place.

Atmosphere & Setting

Blackhole Bakery has a relaxed, welcoming feel, making it an ideal brunch stop while exploring Kansas City. We visited before heading to the nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and it proved to be the perfect start to the day.

The bakery operates with a rotating flavour menu, meaning there’s usually something new to try — from chocolate and mango to caramel corn, pumpkin, and apple cider.

Be warned: these treats are popular and often sell out early.

What We Ordered

We opted for two chocolate mochi doughnuts and a vanilla variety, while my husband chose a Birthday Cake Croissant and I went for the Chocolate Croissant.

The mochi doughnuts were the standout — perfectly baked, delightfully chewy, and packed with flavour. They strike that rare balance between indulgent and light, offering a texture that’s completely different from traditional doughnuts.

The Birthday Cake flavour was particularly interesting. In the UK, “birthday cake” as a standalone flavour isn’t common, but here it worked surprisingly well — sweet, nostalgic, and genuinely enjoyable.

In fact, we found these pastries even more memorable than some of the famous Danish pastries we’d previously tried abroad — a bold claim, but an honest one.

Service & Overall Experience

The staff were friendly, helpful, and happy to guide us through the rotating menu options. Service was efficient, even during busy periods, and the overall experience felt polished yet relaxed.

For anyone visiting Kansas City and looking for something a little different from the city’s well-known barbecue scene, Blackhole Bakery offers a refreshing and flavour-packed alternative.
