The Bower Inn: Local Comfort with a Side of Charm

With a good friend visiting for the weekend, we were on the hunt for somewhere local to enjoy a laid-back meal and a bit of atmosphere. After hearing a few whispers about The Bower Inn, we decided it was the perfect time to finally give it a try. Nestled just a short drive away, it promised charm, comfort, and—hopefully—some solid plates of food. Here’s how it fared on The Gourmet Gauge

Our Review:

There’s something about The Bower Inn that draws you in before you’ve even crossed the threshold. Maybe it’s the sight of sun-dappled tables outside, pints clinking and dogs lazing happily underfoot. Or perhaps it’s the promise of a proper countryside pub experience—relaxed, rustic, and full of charm.

With a friend visiting for the weekend, we were in the mood for something local, warm, and welcoming—and The Bower Inn ticked all the boxes. Step inside and you’re greeted with full-on country-core vibes: exposed wooden beams, roaring fireplaces, and a friendly team who make you feel like a regular, even if it’s your first time through the door.

The menu changes seasonally, giving you the sense that what’s on offer is fresh, thoughtful, and inspired by what’s good at the moment. On our visit, there were around a dozen mains to choose from, including some hefty burgers that immediately caught our eye. Both my husband and I went for the same thing (no regrets): a juicy beef burger loaded with mustard aioli, smoked cheddar, maple and bacon relish, and crispy onions—basically, the works. It arrived nestled on a wooden board, the burger resting on branded greaseproof paper, and the fries served up in a cute little wire basket.

Our friend went for the Hummus Bowl, which turned out to be the visual showstopper—a riot of colour, texture, and freshness in a bowl. It was clear the kitchen takes pride in presentation, and even clearer that the flavours live up to it. The burger was cooked just right, the mustard aioli adding a nice tangy kick without overpowering the rest. Every bite was satisfying and indulgent.

Service throughout was warm and attentive—genuine hospitality without being overbearing. While the prices leaned towards the higher end, it felt justified. The ingredients are clearly quality, the atmosphere is spot on, and everything feels carefully curated rather than just thrown together.

If you’re in Somerset and fancy a meal somewhere that balances comfort with quality, rustic charm with flavour-forward food, The Bower Inn is well worth a visit. Just make sure to bring your appetite—and maybe a furry friend too.

When I met the legendary TV chef, Ainsley Harriott and the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, I managed to get a meet & greet book signing and it was inspirational to see him. It gave me more motivation to do more home cooking.
