Sitting right in the heart of Bridgwater, The Tudor Hotel is one of the town’s most recognisable buildings thanks to its striking historic exterior and traditional pub feel. Combining centuries of history with a cosy dining atmosphere, it has built a strong reputation locally as somewhere to enjoy hearty food, drinks and a relaxed meal in a characterful setting. After hearing plenty of positive things about it over the years, we finally paid a visit to see whether it lived up to its reputation.
*Unfortunately it looks like I didn’t take photos here of the food, sorry 😦
Dining at The Tudor Hotel:
We visited The Tudor Hotel in Bridgwater for a birthday celebration, with eight of us altogether for the evening. Having heard plenty about the venue over the years, we were looking forward to finally trying it out for ourselves — especially somewhere so well known locally for both its history and food.
Atmosphere & Setting:
The first thing that immediately stands out about The Tudor Hotel is the building itself. From the outside, the historic black-and-white exterior is incredibly striking and easily one of the most recognisable buildings in Bridgwater.
Thankfully, that historic character continues once you step inside too. Original wooden beams, fireplaces and period features throughout the venue help create a really cosy and traditional pub atmosphere, and it definitely feels like somewhere packed with history.
One thing we did notice however was just how many covers they seemed to fit into the restaurant areas. Because of that, the venue became extremely noisy whilst we were there, simply due to the sheer amount of people dining inside at once. Whilst it certainly created a lively atmosphere, it did make things feel slightly cramped at times.
What We Ordered:
The menu was very much your stereotypical pub grub selection, with plenty of familiar favourites including Steak & Ale Pie, lasagne, ham, egg & chips, cod & chips and a large grill menu selection.
That said, there were also a few slightly unexpected dishes on the menu too — including Kleftico, a baked lamb-on-the-bone dish served with Greek potatoes, tomato and onion. Definitely not something you expect to randomly spot on a traditional pub menu in Bridgwater.
Both my husband and I decided to order the New York Chicken Burger, which came with a breaded chicken breast, bacon, mozzarella and BBQ sauce, alongside salad, coleslaw and fries.
In fairness, the portion size was very good, and not many places actually give you both salad AND coleslaw with a burger these days.
Overall, the food was good pub grub. Nothing mind-blowing, nothing badly cooked — just solid, enjoyable food done properly. Everything was cooked well, portions were generous and there weren’t really any major faults with the meal itself.
The only slight downside was the pricing. At £16, the burger perhaps felt a couple of pounds more expensive than it probably should have been. We’ve had similarly priced burgers in more premium locations that felt a little more elevated than this one. Still though, aside from that minor negative, the food was enjoyable across the board.
Not excellent. Not bad. Just genuinely good pub food.
Service & Overall Experience:
The service throughout the evening was friendly, helpful and perfectly pleasant. Staff were attentive enough, food arrived without issues and everything ran smoothly for our table of eight.
That said, it wasn’t necessarily the kind of service that particularly stood out or elevated the experience further. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it at all — it was simply solid, standard service that did the job well.
Combined with the historic surroundings and relaxed pub atmosphere though, it still made for an enjoyable evening overall.
Final Thoughts:
The Tudor Hotel is exactly what many people will want from a traditional British pub dining experience — historic surroundings, hearty pub grub, generous portions and a lively atmosphere.
Whilst the food probably doesn’t quite reach the level of being destination dining, it’s still enjoyable, reliable and well executed for what it is. The historic setting is undoubtedly one of the venue’s biggest strengths, and despite the slightly noisy dining areas and pricing feeling a touch high in places, we still had a really enjoyable evening overall.
Pros and Cons:
- Stunning historic building packed with character✅
- Good, reliable pub food with plenty of classic options✅
- Dining areas can feel crowded and very noisy❌
Gourmet Gauge: The Tudor Hotel delivers exactly what you’d expect from a traditional British pub restaurant — hearty portions, classic comfort food and a warm historic setting. Whilst it may not completely wow in terms of food or service, the character of the building and consistently solid pub grub still make it a worthwhile dining spot in Bridgwater.
