Located in the Somerset village of Middlezoy, The Levels Country Kitchen has become our go-to spot for a local Sunday brunch. Unlike many of the places we review, we’ve visited here countless times over the years, returning again and again for its welcoming atmosphere, hearty breakfasts and consistently good food. After so many visits, it felt only right to finally give one of our favourite local cafés a proper review.

Dining at The Levels Country Kitchen:
Unlike many of the places we review, The Levels Country Kitchen isn’t somewhere we’ve visited just once. Over the years we’ve stopped by for breakfast, brunch, lunch and even the occasional tea and cake, and every single visit has left us impressed.
That’s probably the biggest compliment we can give any café. One great visit can happen anywhere, but consistency across multiple visits is what turns somewhere into a favourite. The Levels Country Kitchen has become exactly that for us — our go-to place for a local Sunday brunch and somewhere we find ourselves returning to time and time again.
Atmosphere & Setting:
The Levels Country Kitchen perfectly balances rustic charm with a modern café feel. The interior gives off a country chic vibe, with plenty of natural light flooding the dining area and creating a bright, welcoming space to relax and enjoy a meal.
Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or settling down for a leisurely brunch, the café manages to feel cosy without being cramped and stylish without being pretentious. It’s the sort of place where you instantly feel comfortable, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons we keep coming back.
What We Ordered:
One of the biggest strengths of The Levels Country Kitchen is the sheer variety available on the menu.
The breakfast menu alone includes dishes such as The Levels Grill, Chorizo Hash, Steak & Eggs, French Toast, a selection of pancakes and numerous egg dishes including Eggs Florentine and Eggs Benedict. Then, if you’re visiting later in the day, you’ll find Quiche of the Day, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, flatbreads and plenty more on the lunch menu.
And somehow, that’s still not everything, because they also offer a Sunday Roast menu — something we still haven’t managed to try yet.
Across our many visits we’ve sampled a fair amount of the menu, including their Breakfast Plates, burgers, Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Pancakes, Quiche of the Day and several other dishes that have blurred into one over time.
What hasn’t blurred though is the quality.
Every dish we’ve ordered has been packed with flavour, cooked well and presented beautifully. Presentation is clearly something they take seriously here, with each plate arriving looking every bit as appetising as it tastes. After all, if food looks incredible, surely it’s already halfway towards tasting incredible too?
Thankfully, at The Levels Country Kitchen, the food consistently delivers on both fronts.
Service & Overall Experience:
The service is another area where The Levels Country Kitchen consistently excels. Across every visit we’ve made, the staff have always been friendly, approachable and more than happy to offer recommendations if you’re struggling to decide what to order.
What stands out most though are the little touches. On one visit, my husband ordered a coffee which came with a complimentary biscuit. I simply ordered a glass of water, but the staff member brought me a biscuit as well so I wouldn’t feel left out.
It’s a tiny gesture, but those small moments often tell you everything you need to know about a place. The team clearly care about creating a welcoming experience for their customers, and it’s those extra touches that help elevate The Levels Country Kitchen above many other cafés.
Final Thoughts:
You can probably tell by now why The Levels Country Kitchen has become one of our favourite local places.
Great food, consistently friendly service, an extensive menu and a welcoming atmosphere combine to create a café that gets the basics right every single time. Whether you’re visiting for breakfast, brunch, lunch or simply coffee and cake, it’s a place that delivers quality and consistency in equal measure.
For us, it’s become the benchmark for a local café done properly — and we’ll no doubt be back again very soon.
Pros and Cons:
- Consistently excellent food across multiple visits✅
- Friendly staff who go above and beyond for customers✅
- Sunday roast remains untested (more of an observation than a con!)❌
