Good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you happen to be reading from. We are continuing our reviews of the eateries we visited on our recent trip to The New Forest, and up next is The House at Home, in Romsey.

Our Review:
“Our second gastronomic escapade during our New Forest sojourn was at The Old House at Home, a charming thatched cottage nestled just a few minutes’ stroll from the bustling high street of Romsey. It’s evidently a beloved spot among both locals and travellers, as it was fully booked for the evening—thankfully, we made a reservation in advance.
From the moment we entered, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism by a delightful gentleman who swiftly escorted us to our table, provided the menus, and inquired about our drink preferences. The service throughout our visit was impeccable, with attentive staff ensuring our culinary experience was flawless, from checking on our meals to offering tempting dessert options.
The menu boasted a diverse array of delectable choices across starters, mains, and desserts. Highlights included Baked Camembert with Toasted Sourdough, Soup of the Day, Traditional Beer-Battered Fish and Chips, Chef’s Special Chicken Curry, and Caramel Apple Crumble Pie. We opted for the Baked Camembert to start, followed by Ham, Egg, and Chips and Chicken Breast with Mushroom & Marsala Sauce, Fondant Potatoes, and Seasonal Vegetables. We culminated our feast with the Melt-in-the-Middle Chocolate Pudding.
Every bite was a delight. My husband raved about his roast chicken breast, declaring it one of the best he’s ever had, particularly enchanted by the rich, savoury Marsala sauce. The thick-cut ham was a slice of perfection, and the chips were golden, crisp on the outside, and wonderfully fluffy inside.
The ambience struck the perfect balance—not too loud, not too quiet. The presence of a well-behaved dog added a touch of homely charm. Though the mains were priced just under £20, the quality, location, and overall experience justified the expense. You truly get what you pay for in this delightful little town on the fringe of the New Forest.
We will undoubtedly return to Romsey, and The Old House at Home will be a definite stop on our itinerary. This culinary gem has earned a permanent spot on our list of must-visit eateries!

Gourmet Gauge:
The food was exceptional, boasting outstanding quality, flavours, and flawless presentation. The service was impeccable, and the ambience perfectly captured the essence of a popular dining establishment. Although the price was on the higher side, with each of us paying around £40 for three courses, it was well justified by the superior quality of the ingredients and the exquisite dining experience.
