Tourists Love It, Locals Swear by It—But Is Lagkagehuset Actually Any Good?

During our honeymoon visit to Copenhagen, we stumbled across a bakery chain, and we kept on going back time and time again. The name? Lagkagehuset! They are a Danish bakery chain with over 140 branches across Denmark, England and New York City. The company itself is relatively new, only starting up in 2008, but they have perfected their bakes.

Our Review:

Food: Lagkagehuset specialises in baked goods, and of course, being a Danish company, you know that they’re going to make amazing Danish pastries, and they do! You can find pastries such as croissants, cinnamon swirls & Spandauer as well as other baked goods such as Gateau Marcel, Muscovado Moment‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌ & Cinnamon Socials. The pastries were amazing, we would have one as a mid-morning snack, and I can almost guarantee that we ended up going back again later in the day! They were crafted with perfection, looking very intricate on the plates they were placed upon.”

Locations: As mentioned in the opener, you can find Lagkagehuset mostly in Denmark, you can also find them under the different name of ‘Ole & Steen’. You can find 3 of these in New York City, a bunch in London and 1 in the city of Oxford.

Ambience, Service & Value: The shops have a slightly luxurious look to them, luring you in with their window displays and the wafting scent of freshly cooked pastry and dough. The service is efficient, and the staff, when asked, would recommend what you should try. We literally tried so many of their pastries during our stay in Copenhagen, and we also managed to visit an Ole & Steen and try a few more in London. The price is expensive in Denmark for most things, similar to when visiting any of the Baltic countries, but the quality counters the price, so it is worth it in the end.”

Pros & Cons:

  • Danish pastries available in England✅
  • Freshly baked✅
  • Friendly, attentive staff✅
  • Needs more locations across the UK!❌

Gourmet Gauge:
Lagkagehuset (Ole & Steen) offers freshly baked Danish bakery goods across multiple countries. They taste incredible and are good value for money, taking into consideration the high quality of ingredients. The service is friendly, and the ambience gives off swathes of luxury.

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

There are many traits that I like about myself, my kindness & my respect for others. My outlook on life is to let others be who they want to be and to not judge them, whether they have a slightly strange hobby, or they identify as trans, or are a different sexuality, race or religion to me, or whether they have terrible fashion taste (like myself!).
