Food Review: Markthal – Rotterdam

We have been lucky to visit Rotterdam twice during cruises to Northern Europe, and one place we love visiting whilst here is their food market, the Markthal. It is home to around 30+ eateries and food stands, ranging from traditional Dutch cuisine, to cuisine across Asia. We have tried 4 eateries at the Markthal, check out our views of them down below.

CHCO: The first one is one that we have visited on each occasion we have visited. CHCO is a Dutch chocolate company which sells a whole range of chocolate treats as well as hot drinks such as coffee & hot chocolate. Their staff have always been super friendly when serving us, and they always give a complimentary chocolate when ordering a hot drink. As well as ordering coffees we also pick up a pot or 2 of their chocolate truffles as they are absolutely divine.

Gourmet Gauge: Great tasting chocolate, top level service. The Markthal is a busy venue, and seating is limited, so try and visit during off-peak hours.

Bram Ladage: The second eatery is one that we have only visited once, and that is Bram Ladage. This is another Dutch vendor, this time serving traditional chips. Freshly cut, freshly fried, with a host of sauces to choose from. Perfectly crispy outside and fluffy interior. Once again, a very busy vendor, with no seating, takeaway only.

Gourmet Gauge: Great chips, great sauces to match. Busy vendor, serving takeaway only.

De Ijssalon: Another eatery that we have only visited once. De Ijssalon is a gelato vendor serving an array of flavours, which can be eaten from a cone or a tub. For me, it has always got to be in a tub. Cones are okay, but I want to taste the pure flavours of the gelato, and you can guarantee the gelato won’t reach the bottom of the cone. Takeaway only again, as you can tell, not a lot of the vendors have seating. Some do, in fact some have seating above the vendor, giving views of this wonderful architectural market hall.

Gourmet Gauge: Lovely selection of gelato. Great value for money, and efficient service.

Goudstroop: We have visited this vendor on both visits to the Markthal, as they serve authentic Dutch Stroop waffles. We watch them as they place the batter, mould the batter into it’s classic shape, and then fill it with the filling of our choice. You have the classic caramel, but you also have Nutella, pistachio, biscoff and more! Great service. Great prices.

Gourmet Gauge: Freshly made Stroop waffles, like watching art being crafted right in front of you. Taste very good, great service and value for money.
