Food Review: Broodbakker Simon Meijssen

Going back to February last year we went on a cruise around Northern Europe, and we stopped over in Rotterdam for 2 days. On the first day of this stop, we decided to travel across to Amsterdam for a few hours, sidenote, this became a travelling nightmare. Anyway, we managed to visit the Heineken Experience as well as wonder the streets and bridges of Amsterdam. Upon our travels we did come across this lovely little bakery called Broodbakker Simon Meijssen.

Review: Broodbakker Simon Meijssen is a third generational bakery located in Amsterdam, with 7 locations scattered across the city. We visited after doing the Heineken Experience (highly recommend if you enjoy doing tours of breweries, distilleries etc). We literally saw this place as we were walking back towards the metro and could smell the array of bread and baked goods, so we popped in, got a seat along the bench, and ordered some food.

We were hungry, but not gasping for a great big meal, so we both grabbed one of their cheese croissants, and it was safe to say, it was a very good croissant. The cheese was scattered all across the croissant, sometimes you get ones that are piled in the middle, and the ends left bare…not these bad boys.

When it comes to the ambience of the shop, the outside of the one we visited looked very grand, emerald green tiles on the outside with gold font for the name, it’s what drew us in along with the wafting aromas. Staff were super friendly inside, easy to understand and helpful to us tourists, and the price was very good too. So if you find yourself wondering around for a traditionally baked good in Amsterdam, don’t go for “those” brownies, go for a third generational cheese croissant at Simon Meijssen!

Do you trust your instincts?

I like to think my instincts are very good. I can usually tell when someone is feeling down. Sometimes my husband comes back from work, and I can tell he’s had a bad day. Or there is people at work, and there is slight differences in how they act. I seem to be able to pick up on the smallest of detail when it comes to the way people act.
