If you’ve ever wanted to experience a classic waterfront brewery during your visit to Toronto, this is a stop worth considering. Known for its historic setting and craft beer focus, Steam Whistle offers a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy locally brewed pilsner-style beer. During our recent trip, we decided to stop by to see how this popular brewery lived up to its reputation.

Dining at Steam Whistle Kitchen:
We were warmly greeted on arrival and quickly shown to our table by a friendly member of staff. After browsing the menu, we were informed that a few dishes were unavailable that evening, which was slightly disappointing as the burger I had originally wanted was off the table.
We started with the pretzel entrée served with marinara dip. The portion was enormous — definitely shareable — and packed with carb-heavy comfort food goodness.
For mains, I ordered the lasagne while my husband chose the vodka pasta. Both dishes were genuinely impressive. The lasagne was one of the best I have tasted, with rich flavours and a satisfying homemade feel, while the vodka pasta was also excellent.
Atmosphere & Setting:
The ambience inside the brewery was fantastic. The interior features high wooden ceilings, neon signage and plenty of greenery, creating a modern yet rustic vibe.
What makes this location special is its heritage character — the building is an old train roundhouse, and the working turntable is still visible just outside the main dining area. Surrounding the brewery are pieces of Canada’s locomotive history, adding a unique historical touch to the experience.
What We Ordered:
- Pretzel starter with marinara dip
- Lasagne
- Vodka pasta
Service & Overall Experience
Service was friendly and efficient throughout our visit. While the menu unavailability was a little frustrating, the staff handled it politely.
The pricing was also surprisingly reasonable for Toronto. It’s worth remembering that Canadian menus usually display prices before tax and tipping, so the final bill will be slightly higher. Even so, our meal worked out at roughly £30 per person including a drink, which felt good value compared to UK pricing.
Final Thoughts:
Steam Whistle Kitchen is a great casual dining and brewery experience, especially if you want somewhere atmospheric yet relaxed near the waterfront. The food quality exceeded expectations and the setting inside the historic railway building makes it stand out as a tourist-friendly stop.
Pros and Cons:
- Unique historic roundhouse setting with locomotive views✅
- Generous portion sizes (the pretzel is huge!)✅
- Excellent pasta dishes, especially the lasagne✅
- Some menu items were unavailable on the day❌
