1. Taco Naco
Up first is Taco Naco, one of the very first spots we visited during our time in Kansas City—and one that made an instant impression. This vibrant Mexican eatery serves up bold, flavour-packed dishes in generous, colourful portions that truly capture the spirit of Mexican street food.
Taco Naco is best known for its standout tacos, with a menu that goes far beyond the basics. From their signature creations to vegan, seafood, and even breakfast tacos, there’s something here for every kind of craving. And it doesn’t stop there—expect loaded burritos, cheesy quesadillas, and a range of indulgent sides that make it easy to turn a quick stop into a full-on feast.
2. Betty Rae’s
Next up is Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. We first discovered this spot during our 2023 trip while exploring the vibrant River Market neighbourhood, searching for something refreshing to escape the 30+ degree heat—and it couldn’t have been more perfect.
From the moment we stepped inside, the place made an impression. The décor blends urban style with playful creativity, featuring colourful interiors and a striking graffiti-style mural at the entrance that instantly sets the tone. It’s fun, energetic, and exactly what you want from a modern dessert spot.
But the real star here is the ice cream. Betty Rae’s is known for its bold and inventive flavours, with combinations you won’t find just anywhere—think goat’s cheese, apricot & candied walnut, alongside classics with a twist like crème brûlée. Whether you opt for a simple scoop, a loaded sundae, an ice cream sandwich, or even a float, there are endless ways to indulge.
We loved it so much that one visit simply wasn’t enough—we made sure to return one last time before leaving Kansas City, which says it all really.
3. Hemma Hemma Dinette
Our third spot is Hemma Hemma Dinette, and this is one we’re including based on extensive research and local buzz rather than personal experience—because sometimes the most exciting finds come from digging a little deeper.
A sister location to the well-loved Hemma Hemma in Armour Hills, Hemma Hemma Dinette is quickly gaining attention as a go-to for comfort-driven breakfast and lunch dishes. The menu leans into American classics with a twist, featuring favourites like biscuits & gravy (one of our personal go-to US dishes), matzo ball soup, and hearty sandwiches such as the country club—perfect for a satisfying, no-fuss meal.
The vibe is equally appealing. Expect a cute, cosy diner feel with checkered patterns, warm brown tones, and a subtle retro aesthetic that gives off a nostalgic 80s charm. It’s the kind of place that feels both familiar and inviting, ideal for a relaxed start to the day or a laid-back lunch stop.
With its sister location already impressing locals, Hemma Hemma Dinette feels like one to watch—and very likely a future favourite on the Kansas City food scene.
4. Le Fou Frog
Rounding off our selection is Le Fou Frog, another River Market standout that’s earned its place on this list through extensive research and a strong local reputation.
Known for its unpretentious yet refined French cuisine, Le Fou Frog brings a slice of Parisian bistro culture right to the heart of Kansas City. The menu is elegant and ever-evolving, shaped by seasonal ingredients and what’s freshest at the time. Expect classic French dishes such as veal osso buco saltimbocca, truffle pappardelle, steak tartare, and of course, escargot—each prepared with care and authenticity.
Step inside and the atmosphere completes the experience. With softly lit interiors, rustic wooden tables, and shelves lined with bottles behind the bar, it captures that intimate, slightly moody charm you’d expect from a traditional French bistro. It’s the kind of place that feels perfect for a slow, indulgent meal rather than a quick bite.
Already a favourite among Kansas City locals, Le Fou Frog has built a reputation as one of the city’s top spots for French dining—and it’s easy to see why it continues to stand the test of time.
