Bunners Bakeshop, Toronto Review

Kensington Market is full of character, colour, and no shortage of incredible food spots — but every now and then, you come across somewhere that feels a little different. Bunner’s Bakeshop is one of those places.

Known for its plant-based, gluten-free baked goods, this cosy bakery has built a reputation for proving that dietary-friendly treats don’t have to compromise on flavour. Naturally, with a display full of tempting bakes and a steady stream of customers walking through the door, we had to see if it really lived up to the hype.

Dining at Bunners Bakeshop:

We visited Bunner’s on our first full day exploring Toronto, wandering through Kensington Market and soaking up everything the area has to offer — from thrift stores to independent shops and everything in between.

It was during that wander that we stumbled across Bunner’s — a bakery proudly advertising itself as 100% vegan and 100% gluten-free.

Curiosity instantly kicked in.

Atmosphere & Setting:

The bakery itself is small, cosy, and exactly what you’d expect from a neighbourhood spot in Kensington Market. It has that relaxed, independent feel — somewhere you can pop in, grab a treat, and carry on exploring.

The display counter was packed with baked goods, each one looking just as tempting as the next.

What We Ordered:

We initially kept it simple, opting for a couple of chocolate chunk cookies to take away.

And while they were enjoyable… there’s a small regret here.

Afterwards, we discovered their signature Josephine Louise — a layered red velvet cake with coconut-based cream cheese filling, all covered in chocolate ganache.

And honestly?

If only we’d known.

Service & Overall Experience

Service was a real highlight. The staff member who served us was friendly, helpful, and happy to guide us through the options — exactly what you want when you’re trying something a little different.

It added a warm, welcoming feel to the whole experience.

Final Thoughts:

The cookies were good — no question about that.

But if we’re being honest, they didn’t quite hit the same level as some of the other bakeries we tried in Toronto. At the time, we didn’t actually realise everything was vegan and gluten-free, which probably explains why they tasted slightly different from what we were expecting.

That said, for anyone with dietary requirements, this place could be an absolute gem. Finding baked goods that cater to both vegan and gluten-free diets without sacrificing quality is no easy task — and Bunner’s does a solid job of it.

Value for money felt slightly on the higher side, but that’s fairly expected given the specialised ingredients involved.

For us, it was a good stop — but not quite enough to pull us back for a second visit. Still, it’s one we’d absolutely recommend for those specifically seeking vegan or gluten-free treats.

Pros and Cons:

  • Fully vegan and gluten-free menu✅
  • Great option for dietary requirements✅
  • Didn’t quite wow compared to other bakeries❌

Gourmet Gauge: A solid option for vegan and gluten-free bakes, with great service and good quality — but not quite a standout compared to some of Toronto’s top bakeries.
